Another influence for the song could be the writings of Carlos Castaneda who wrote about paranormal experiences.

I love this song….it makes me smile to listen to it, and makes me move around even if I’m sitting.
I always loved Curious George, too, and this song is on the soundtrack to the movie released in 2006.

A Few Facts Concerning Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon

1. The album has sold 34 million copies worldwide.

2. The album was number one on US charts for one week in 1973, and it made the number two spot in the UK. In 1993, after re-mastering and when it was re-released the album made it to number four in the UK.

3. In Belgium and France the album reached number 1, it was number 2 in Austria, and number 3 in Austrailia. It was number 4 in Holland and number 5 in Spain, Finland, and German but not at the same time. It also made it to number 8 in Brazil during 1973.

4. The Guiness Book of World Records states the album has been on the charts longer than any other album in history……namely 591 consecutive weeks or 11.4 years in Billboard top 200…..a staggering 26 years in some Billboard chart or other.

5. The original title for the album was Eclipse (A Piece for Assorted Lunatics)…..

6. The music and lyrics for the entire album were written during a seven week period in which the band were preparing for a tour which they desperately wanted to premier new material.

7. Some of the lines used on the album were generated from cue cards with generic questions that were given to roadies, anyone at Abbey Road, doormen, and members of Wings including Paul and Linda McCartney. Questions included “Are you afraid of dying?”, “When was the last time you were violent and were you in the right?”, and “What does the phrase ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ mean to you?”

8. Wings guitarist, Henry McColluch provided the line, “I don’t know I was really drunk at the time” that is used at fade out of Money.

9. The stoned laughter used in the background of Speak to Me and Brain Damage is from Peter Watts, a road manager for the Floyd pictured on the back of the Ummagumma sleeve. His daughter is Naomi Watts, a famous actress…..

10. During the recording of the album studio time was interrupted for one of two reasons….soccer or Monty Python television broadcasts. The members of the band were such Python fans that they used some of the money made from the initial success of the album to help fund Monty Python’s Holy Grail film.

11. The album was recorded at Abbey Road on then state of the art 16-track equipment. In order to create the tape loops necessary to achieve the rhythmic chiming of the sound effects for Money……the tape had to be physically cut and mended precisely using a ruler and manually feeding them into a tape machine for duplication.

12. Parsons received a Grammy as the record won the “Best Engineered Album” award.

13. Australian radio listeners voted the album the best album to have sex to in 1990.

14. Us and Them was originally written by Richard Wright in 1969 as an instrumental piano solo intended for use in a movie. The song was meant to be used over slow-motion scenes of student/police riots at UCLA. The music was finally rejected but once Waters penned lyrics the song made on Dark Side.

15. Throughout the 1990s rumors persisted that the album was intended to be played back while watching The Wizard of Oz. Many similarities were depicted between the music, lyrics, and the film. The band have denied that the classic film made an impression on them while recording the album, but if you want to judge for yourself be sure to start the CD at the third roar of the MGM lion at the start of the film!

16. At the end of Eclipse listen for the voice that says, “there is no dark side of the moon really, as a matter of fact it’s all dark”,…..if you listen closely you can hear a muzak version of the Beatles’ Ticket to Ride. It was probably being played in the main offices at Abbey Road and was picked up on the microphones.

I love this song, and I love this band!

Their name derives from the Ma Barker gang that included Ma and her sons. They did end up meeting with “divine justice”.

So, is this a Christian band? Wikipedia quotes a band member as saying “For us our faith is what makes us. We believe in showing our fans respect and kindness. I love when bands minister, as long as their lifestyle off the stage lives up to their life on stage. Nowadays it is kinda cliché in some markets to be a Christian band but being that in itself is hard and can sometimes put a bull’s eye on your back. It is not an easy thing sometimes, but no one is perfect. But living to the standards of what you preach and talk about is a big deal and something we chose to do everyday.

Ozzy and the Bat

On this day in 1982 Ozzy Osbourne bit the head off a bat he thought was rubber while performing at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines, Iowa. There is a little controversy regarding the incident. Ozzy states the bat was alive while the lady who brought the bat to concert contends it was already dead. Either way….Ozzy underwent a series of rabies shots.

Personal Jesus

So have you ever thought about making someone into your own personal Jesus?

Apparently Martin Gore of Depeche Mode fame did. The song, Personal Jesus, was inspired by the relationship between Priscilla Presley and Elvis Presley as detailed in the book Elvis and Me.
In an article published in Spin Magazine Gore stated, “It’s a song about being a Jesus for somebody else, someone to give you hope and care. It’s about how Elvis was her man and her mentor and how often that happens in love relationships; how everybody’s heart is like a god in some way, and that’s not a very balanced view of someone , is it?"

I agree….it’s not a balanced view of someone, but I love the song and I like Depeche Mode.

Some of the adjectives used to describe Depeche Mode is successful, influential, and longest lived for bands that emerged from the early 80s.

The marketing campaign for the song, Personal Jesus, is pretty interesting. Advertisements were placed in the personal columns of UK regional newspapers with the words “Your own personal Jesus” and a phone number was provided. When the number was called folks heard the song.

The song has been covered by many including Marilyn Manson and Johnny Cash.

Have you ever heard the saying that we should only write about what we know?

With that idea in mind the inspiration for this song was a fictional situation where a white boy attempts to write a song about Africa, but since he had never been to Africa or didn’t have much knowledge about it at all he used what he had previously read or seen in movies or on television.

One of the first albums I purchased after I got my first car was the debut album by Van Halen. In 1978 you could still purchase 8-track cassette and since that’s what my car had….that’s what I bought. I loved every song, and still do.

Initially, Eruption was not considered a song for the album. Eddie Van Halen used it as a studio warm up; however, when a producer heard it he asked that it appear as a track on the album. Years later in an interview Eddie revealed that he had made a mistake at the top end of it.

I’ve always liked this song, but never paid too much attention to the lyrics until now. The Biblical references are interesting. Some state that the lyrics of Desert Rose are inspired by the Frank Herbert novel, Dune, possibly because Sting played the villainous Feyd Rautha in the 1984 film adaptation. Both film and book feature the Arabic language.

The song also features the Algerian rai singer Cheb Mami………the genre of the song is given as World.

This album was the point where I graduated from collecting 45s to purchasing albums. It was first available for sale on March 17, 1973. I was eleven. Many critics consider Dark Side of the Moon to be Pink Floyd’s defining work, and is still frequently ranked by music critics as one of the greatest and most influential albums of all time.

Dark Side of the Moon is the third best selling album of all time worldwide and ranks 20th in the United States. It spent over fourteen years on Billboard’s list of top 200 best selling albums, longer than any other album in history.

I was able to see Diana Krall several, several months ago when she appeared at Atlanta’s Chastain Park.

My husband had won the tickets from a radio station. While I had heard her and recognized her voice the concert was my first true exposure to her musical style.

Cabbagetown

The song I’m bathing in today is “Cabbagetown” by Shawn Mullins. Why? For starters Shawn Mullins is from my state, and Cabbagetown has historical significance for someone like me…an Atlantan.

Cabbagetown is a particular section of Atlanta….you can read about it here…the neighborhood website has everything you would want to know about it.

Quick facts regarding Shawn Mullins:

*best known for his 1998 hit Lullaby. It was number one on the Adult Top 40 and nominated for a Grammy Award.

*Graduated from Clarkston High School in Clarkston, Georgia.

*Friends with Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls.

*Attended North Georgia College and State University where he was bandmaster of the military marching band.

*You might recognize another famous song of his titled “All Im My Head,” featured on the hit tv show “Scrubs.” The song was written after an email was sent out by the producers indicating they were searching for a new theme song. It wasn’t selected, but was used in the first episode.

*The television show “Dawson’s Creek” used his song “Shimmer.”

I usually refer to Averil Lavigne as “that angy young girl” when discussing her music with my teenage daughter because her songs are all a little “mad”. However, it would appear that she’s far from being angry, is not the teenybopper you would imagine, and is even happily married as of this writing.

While her style of music is far, far from the country band Alabama, Averil Lavigne found a style and has stuck with it to the point that most all of her library of music sounds similar.

I particularly like her song “Girlfriend”…..

And you know I’m right.

Back in 2007, Lavigne was sued along with co-writer Lukasz Gottwald and her record title. The complaint contended the song was plagiarized from the song “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” performed by The Rubinoos. You can read more about the “p” issue over at this Wikipedia page.

Beds Are Burning

The band Midnight Oil got their name by drawing lyrics out of a hat.

Beds Are Burning was the first track from the album Diesels and Dust.

Wikipedia advises “Beds Are Burning” is a political song about giving native Australian lands back to the Pintupi, who were among the very last people to come in from the desert. These “last contact” people began moving from the Gibson Desert to settlements and missions in the late 1930s. More were forcibly moved during the 1950s and 1960s to the Papunya settlement. In 1981, they left to return to their own country and established the Kintoire community which is nestled in the picturesque Kintore Ranges, surrounded by Mulga and Spinfex country. It is now a thriving little community with a population of about 400.

Midnight Oil performed the song in front of a world audience of billions (including Prime M
inister John Howard who has claimed this is his favorite Midnight Oil song) at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The whole band was dressed in black, with the words “sorry” printed conspicuously on their clothes. This was a reference to the Prime Minister’s refusal to apologize, on behalf of Australia, to the Aboriginal Australians for the way they have been treated over the previous 200 years, particularly in relation to native title and the government-sanctioned removal of Aboriginal children of the Stolen Generations from their families.

I’ve been listening to some great music lately on DAVE-FM and heard this song I liked so much I pulled over to write down the artist and name of the song….then when I got home and read the full lyrics I laughed. You hear a great song and like the way the lyrics flow, but sometimes you don’t hear all the lyrics right away…they don’t register in your mind. I absolutely love this song….for many reasons. :) Here’s the link to Saving Abel’s Addicted. Warning: you will need headphones as this isn’t G-rated. Measuring the height of a Web site may seem just as impossible as weighing one, but Meiert is playing with the maximum size of a site as allowed by Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers. It's best understood simply by visiting the site.

2. Circoripopolo Goes Artistique- Belgian comic duo Circoripopolo is also expanding its site's design to include your Internet browser. Click on this site and your browser will immediately shrink. You'll first see two pairs of hands squeezing out of a small crack in the otherwise black screen. The duo keeps pushing outward until they've successfully expanded your browser. Later, when they explode their large balloon, your browser shakes.

3. The Human Brain Cloud- Created by Kyle Gabler, the Human Brain Cloud is a giant word-association game that compiles the words most commonly associated with each other. Poor, Poor Miss Teen South Carolina

You have to feel sorry for her, but I mean really........

This is one young lady who doesn't have it together academically. The emcee states, "The interview is the make it or break it part of the contest." Hmmmmmm....can you believe she still came in fourth place?

Sure, one-fifth of the American population can't find the U.S. on a map because......they don't have maps!

In case you think she was just nervous check out her interview on the Miss US Teen website here. Of all the people in the world, living or dead, and she comes up with Lauren Hutton? And she's a star student...not in Algebra, not in Geography....she's a star student in Photoshop! Not much there other than responses that point to fluff and I'm going to use my looks for the rest of my life.

You may wonder where she came up with the words "Iraq", "South Africa", and "help the children"......These are code words the contestants are told will help them obtain a higher score with their answers. She should at least get a high score for including all of them even though her answer makes no sense.

Many people are using this video to comment on the state of public education....I'd rather discuss how this shows how low we have stooped culturally when a young lady such as this and those around her believe all you need is great looks to get ahead.

I'm sad for her. I hope this is a wake up call to the adults surrounding this beauty, and it should be a lesson to many of our young ladies out there.

The Perseids are a prolific meteor shower [1] associated with the comet Swift-Tuttle. The Perseids are so called because the point they appear to come from, called the radiant, lies in the constellation Perseus. Meteor showers occur when Earth moves through a meteor stream. The stream in this case is called the Perseid cloud and it stretches along the orbit of the Comet Swift-Tuttle. The cloud consists of particles ejected by the comet as it passed by the Sun. Most of the dust in the cloud today is approximately a thousand years old. However, there is also a relatively young filament of dust in the stream that boiled off the comet in 1862. The approximate rate of meteors originating from this filament is much higher than normal.
The have been seen for over 2000 years.

One of Europe's largest balloon festivals was set for lift-off yesterday, with nearly half a million enthusiasts gathering to watch hundreds of balloons take to the skies -- weather permitting.

The annual Bristol International Balloon Fiesta takes place at the Ashton Court Estate until Sunday and is expected to attract between 400,000 and 500,000 visitors over the course of the four days.

Traditional highlights include the dawn and dusk mass balloon ascents, where over one hundred balloons of different shapes, sizes and colours will glide through the skies.

Well, it doesn't look like the Periodic Table in my Physical Science class.

The caption with this image states: an alternate and updated periodic table, adapted from tables developed by Thomas Bayley, Jorgen Thompsen, and Niels Bohr. These lables depict symmetrical nature of the periodic law regarding the increase in intervals before periodicity occurs in every other period with the exception of the first one. Tie lines denote chemical analogies.
